My ears haven't stopped itching yet, though. I thought it was a rather silly hex, but the Professor was right: distraction really can make a difference.

'Tarantallegra' is another one you wouldn't think would work so well. But it's really hard to think of a counter-spell when your feet are flailing all over the place.

I wasn't so sure about joining last year, but I'm glad I decided to give it a go this year!

I need to try to be a little faster on my feet though; I landed pretty hard when Fawcett caught me with that Jelly-Legs.

It is! And don't worry--I feel like I'm fairly pants too, most of the time.

I know a lot of the spells, but I just can't seem to think of them when I'm startled--and I guess I'm a little nervous of people doing real Dark Arts stuff, since I'm not taking it.

Well, I have trouble because I can't think on my feet like that. It's like you know so many things you could say, that by the time you pick one, a really good one that would be ace, your opponent has just up and hexed you.

Maybe we're both just overthinking things.

Probably, but have you ever tried to stop overthinking? It's not as easy as it sounds.

Maybe we should duel each other--one of us would have to think of something eventually!

Haha, point! Or we could sort of... practice not thinking? Just blurting out something, and see who could say it faster? We probably shouldn't use wands, though, cause that could get dangerous.

I'd bet Professor Lestrange would know things we could do, too. Like pointers. You want to go up to his office together tomorrow and ask?

We shouldn't have to worry about the Dark Arts stuff until we get classified for the upper levels, right? I thought that was the best thing about the way Professor Lestrange has got it set up, the levels. So there's just a few different kinds of spells you're allowed to use until he upgrades you. I mean, that's still loads of actual spells, but only ones we're ready to deal with and ones we should be able to defend against, you know.

I mean, Professor Lockhart didn't even seem to know that's how duelling clubs are supposed to be set up. How naff is that, right?

Well, I'm still pants at it, big surprise there, but it was still tonnes of fun. And I do think I got a bit better at it this time round -- it's easier to concentrate when you don't have to worry about flourishing properly.
