Hiya, Mum.

I know I could send an owl, but I dunno, I just felt like writing tonight, and I like the idea you might see it right away.

I'm keeping busy and working hard at my assignments. We had a YPL activity where we went and helped fix things at a school, and our next thing is a day-long CCF exercise that ought to be challenging. I guess it's good we have these activities that keep us from spending all our time sitting with our noses in our books because that would be dull, wouldn't it?

I think I may go to bed early tonight because I've stayed up late a lot this week.

Hope you are well. I miss you.

Your favourite son,
Ronald

Dear Mum and Dad,

It was a Hogsmeade day, so we all went into town. It was cold, but I wore my jumper under my robes, Mum, so I kept warm. Don't worry.

It was a bit naff today because loads of people had dates because of Valentines coming up, but that's all right because Zonko's wasn't so crowded as usual, or Honeydukes after they all went off to the Broomsticks or that cafe with the lacy curtains. What's it called? You should've seen it. Whenever anyone opened the door, loads of hearts floated out--like soap bubbles, only pink and sparkly. And heart shaped. Totally naff.

Oh. And I saw Percy. He was coming out of this inn called the Protector's Circle. And while we were talking, didn't Penelope Clearwater come out of there, too? She seemed a bit embarrassed when she saw me. Wonder what they could've been up to in there all afternoon?

Nice that Percy likes his job. He said it's really brilliant. And that he does super important stuff for Mr Malfoy. Shame it's all super secret so he couldn't go on and on, telling me about it. I've really missed that.

Term's going fine.

Looking forward to Easter hols. Did you hear they're getting up a trip for the visiting students? I guess maybe some of us in the YPL might get asked to join in for some of it. Maybe. They haven't said for sure yet.

And the Second Task is coming up.

I think that's pretty much all of it.

Your favourite son,
Ronald

That was wizard fun yesterday! (Except for the part that wasn't, but that didn't change that the whole thing was brilliant.)

The part I liked best was finding our bearings in the snow, because, yeah, that changes everything, but I knew the direction-finding charm to use and worked just like it was supposed to, and that was awesome.

So. What did you do best? Or what was most fun in your group? Aside from WINNING the whole game, before you say that, Perks!!!

I was thinking of going out this afternoon and trying that melting spell to make a long sluice down the sledging hill, but I'm stuck here waiting to talk to Madam Hooch. The twins and Towler said she might know something that could be done about my broom, but she's off to Hogsmeade or something today. I dunno. I want to talk to her, though, while there's still a chance because I think it's just getting worse and worse. I don't really think she'll be able to do anything, but I've got to try, y'know?

Good Show

So that was good fun, yeah?

There were two groups that were really quick to sort the chess. Cheers, Paskle. Nice to meet you, mate. (Bundy says that's not how you spell your name. Sorry if it's not.) Would like to play you for reals sometime. Your approach was different from anyone else's, but definitely sound.

No surprise, really, but Towler's was the other top team. Did you hear what the Queen said about you, mate? Made me blush!

How'd it go at the other spots? I heard about one close call with the Whomping Willow. Hope no one got thrashed!

And tea was great. Glad I didn't miss the cinnamon biscuits.

Is it time for supper yet?

So Bundy and I've been thinking about ways we could keep up some of our orienteering training from CCF and have fun, too. And we thought maybe we could get up a sort of scavenger hunt where you get coordinates and have to find places around the castle and grounds and all and then get clues to the next place. And we wondered if you thought it would be okay. I mean, the weather's still so good and we could either do it as kind of a small thing, just us and just for friends, or we could do it as a YPL thing and invite the younger years, too. And ask Prefects if they'd help manage it, maybe.

Anywiz, we thought maybe we should ask you if you think the idea's a good one.

We've got some totally grim ideas about the places we could use and ways to write the clues and all.

And, oh. Our other thought was we could put it off just a bit and use it as a way to welcome the visitors--y'know, so they could get to know the place. Because the spots we'd use are places students don't go much, anywiz, and the clues will be really tough, so it's not like it will be really easier for people who've been at school here for years.

So, er. What do you think?

Dear Director Selwyn,

My name is Ronald Weasley. You might remember that I played Mad Eye's Mad Cat in the spring play. As a project for the Young Protectors' League, we are each writing to someone in a field we are interested in for a career.

As you know, both my father and my brother Bill work at the Ministry in your department. My dad's in the Department of Purity Control and works with the Muggle Domestication department, too, and my brother Bill's in Communications. I would also like to work at the Ministry someday, probably in one of the departments that you oversee.

I understand that your department oversees the Department for Regional Restoration, Rural Reclamation, and Retroversionary Rigmarole (DFRRRRRR), which surveys former Muggle habitations to see whether they should be restored to a fully natural state, or developed into new wizarding towns. This job sounds really exciting to me! I think I would be good at this because I like exploring and flying, and finding places in the country that have been left empty. I particularly like the idea of blowing up rotten old Muggle places so that nature will take them back faster, and make them beautiful again. I also like the idea of planning where to build new things.

I'm writing to you instead of the surveyors because what matters the most to me is serving Our Lord by working for the Ministry, and I would most like to work in Protectorate Affairs, your division. I like the idea of serving Our Lord as directly as possible, and it's hard to find a better place for that than your department! I admire you a lot, and I know you're a good person to work for. I don't expect a response because I know you're very busy, but thank you for everything you do for us.

Thank you for your time, sir.

Sincerely,
Ronald Weasley

So, er. Towler's quit playing chess with me until I write this letter thing to Director Selwyn 'cause he says I really pretty much have to do whatever it takes to stay in YPL. Says he'd totally be doing it if they'd started with his year, and says it's going to be really, really a bad thing for people who drop out, y'know. Basically all the stuff we've talked about, but I mean, he's older and he thinks the same thing. That it'll help us get jobs or hurt us a lot--one way or the other.

So, yeah.

And anyway, I was only sort of kidding when I asked if you'd write it for me, but, uh, they sort of sat there and watched me while I wrote a draft of it, so I've got this bit written, and it's probably completely naff. So could you take a look and tell me what to say instead?

Uh, so
Dear Director Selwyn.

My name is Ronald Weasley, and you might not remember, but we've talked before. Here in the journals. One time. And I was Mad Eye's Mad Cat in the play this spring, and maybe you remember that since you said Ar your daughter liked the way I played it. Anywiz, I'm writing because I'm in the YPL. You know, the Young Protectors' League. And we're supposed to write a letter to someone who works in a field we're interested in. So I've been thinking a lot about what I might want to do, and I decided probably not working with dragons like my older brother Charlie does because they don't take very many people into that programme and it'd be sort of awful to have to train under my own brother. If you know what I mean. I've met some of the dragon handlers, and they're a pretty rough lot and I think they'd pretty much spend all they'retheir time taking the mickey if I got into training. So not that. And so then I've been thinking about jobs at the Ministry, which you probably know is where my dad and my other brother work. My dad's in the Department of Purity Control and works with the Muggle Domestication department, too, and my brother Bill's in Communications. And I guess those are both good jobs that, you know, make a contribution to the Protectorate and stuff. And Bill got a promotion last year, so I guess he's really good at what he's doing. But I'm not sure I want to always be working in an office indoors, so I've been talking to people about what I like to do and what sort of jobs that might mean I'd be good at, and one of the people in my House said I ought to think about surveying because I like exploring and flying and finding places out in the country that've been left empty and all. And she'd heard that there's a Department of Regional Restoration and Rural Reclamation that's surveying all the places around where Muggles used to live that could be good places for wizards to start new towns of our own since there are getting to be more of us. And I think that'd be a completely wizard job to have! Especially the part where she said she'd heard they're planning to blow up some of the rotten old Muggle places to allow nature to take them back faster so they'll be beautiful again. That'd be amazing to get to blow stuff up. Um, and also to help plan where to build new things or fix and improve places that are okay but just need the Muggle stuff taken away. And, anywiz, I'm writing to you because that's part of your big department, right? And you were nice when we talked before, so I thought you'd probably not be annoyed if I wrote you about this. And I was hoping maybe you'd even write me back to tell me if this'd be a good sort of job for me to try to have someday.

So, yeah. Thank you, sir. I really appreciate your time and everything.

Sincerely,
Ronald Weasley

So. What'd you think?

Anyone want to go out to the pens today and see if those firecrabs have got any bigger? It's probably safer out there than inside today. Especially for you lot in Slytherin.

At least we don't have to go to YPL again this week. Professor Lestrange's lessons are really nift, but that meeting last week was too boring. And Professor Sinistra was so much more, I dunno, 'the Protectorate this' and 'the Protectorate that' than usual. I guess it was because Professor Lestrange was there and she wanted to impress him. But honestly. I hope next month's is better.

I got a letter this morning at breakfast from my brother Charlie, but I didn't want to read it then in front so I only just pulled it out and had a look and it wa d'you know what he says?

He's coming to Hogwarts next weekend for the YPL meeting!!

I guess Professor Sinistra invited some people who work with dangerous creatures, so Charlie's coming to talk about being a dragon handler!

How dead awesome is that?!!

Anybody know if there's a sign-up list yet?

Interesting thing happened yesterday. I dunno whether I'm supposed to say anything, but I reckon it's not really a secret. Least Nick didn't say it was.

So after the YPL meeting, which was pretty interesting, though I still want to be an Auror not a Healer, even if some of them do work on crime scenes and the like. But afterwards, Harry and I were talking and since we had our coats with us, we decided to go outside even though it was still bucketing down out there. And that was really nift, skimming stones on the lake and watching the rain come down on it.

Um, but that's not the thing.

After we came in, we were walking over towards Gryffindor when we ran into Nearly Headless Nick--I mean, we came round a corner and both of us walked right through him, 'cause he was reading something and didn't notice us coming--and then he invited us to come to his 'deathday party' next Saturday night. I guess he'll have been dead exactly 500 years on Saturday. And, anywiz, Granger says it's a real honour to be invited to a ghost's deathday celebration, and I guess she spends more time talking to the ghosts than the rest of us do, so probably she'd know. Nick seemed really keen to have Harry come, which I guess makes sense, since he's who he is.

Anywiz, I guess I'm going to that instead of the Halloween Feast on Saturday. I'll let you know what it's like!
alt_ron: (brilliant)
It would be dead brilliant to be an Auror. I mean, to learn how to go about and not ever have anyone notice you, to be able to creep up on a target and watch them without them knowing you're there. Brilliant.

We've been talking about it since dinner, and the twins have some wizard ideas about disguises! And Bobolis said she'd done a parchment for Acton Professor Acton last year on concealment charms. She's planning to apply for the training programme, Bobolis is. She says not many people get in, and she figures they need more Gryffindors to apply, too, because you really need to not have a nervous personality if you're going to be a good Auror. Or a Hit Wizard. That'd be awesome, too.

Uh.

You said to write, so I am. We made it here just fine and got our tent up. Thomas seems like a good enough chap. Kind of quiet, but then I guess I would be, too, if it were me. Anyway, it's Thomas, me, Seamus, Neville, Macmillan and Moon in the tent, so we're pretty close in there, but that's okay because who wants to spend time inside a tent? Even a nice one. Ours has a pretty wizard lounge, so if it rains a lot, we can probably come in and play Snap.

Dinner was okay. I sorta burnt my meat, but it wasn't that bad. And the potatoes were good. Not as good as last night, though.

So, um, tell Fred and George hey. And Ginny. Tell her that Harry Marvolo did come, so she can stop worrying.

I've got to go. We're practicing juggling some apples we nicked from supper. It's pretty hilarious, actually.
alt_ron: (hey)
Hey, mate. Happy Birthday. I'm late, I know. Sorry. I tried sending an owl, but it came back tonight with the letter unopened, so I guess you didn't get it. Mum wouldn't let me send you any chocs, 'cause she said you get so many gifts from people you don't even know that the parcel room at Buckingham is probably just buried under a mountain of packages. Maybe that's why the owl didn't make it to you?

Anyway, I guess I'll see you this week, yeah? It's going to be wizard, I think! (In fact, it might be even better than I'd thought--I think maybe my parents aren't going to let Percy come along. He's in a huge amount of trouble right now, so I think maybe they're going to make him stay home. Which would be completely wizard since it was going to be dead awful to have him there shouting at me all the time.)

Hope you had a good birthday and all. See you soon!
